How to detect if you have stalkerware on your phone and how to remove it

Stalkerware is essentially spyware for an individual person, it is most commonly used by someone close to you, with that in mind it’s no surprise that this tool is widely associated with domestic violence and people bugging their spouses.

To detect if you have stalkerware installed on your phone there are a few telltale signs:

On IOS:

  • iPhone is jailbroken, but you didnt do it – this can be identified by the app ‘Cydia’.
  • Permissions such as webcam permissions or location permissions are set where you didnt personally allow them.
  • Unfamiliar apps that you didnt install, if this is the case google the names of the apps rather than opening.
  • Battery runs out quicker than usual.

On Android:

  • Battery runs out quicker than usual.
  • Check your google account page > select ‘Device activity & notifications’, this will show you all devices and access to your account and when.
  • Unfamiliar apps that you didnt install, if this is the case google the names of the apps rather than opening.

How to remove Stalkerware

Important notice! Disabling or removing the Stalkerware will notify the person who installed it. Take all precautions before doing this, consider getting a burner phone and contacting legal authorities prior to removal.

  • Remove offending apps.
  • Update OS of phone.
  • Change all passwords and codes to your accounts and to the phone.
  • Factory reset the phone.
  • Get an anti-virus solution

Anti-virus companies are increasingly providing protection against stalkerware, Kaspersky has outwardly spoken out against stalkerware and its impact on victims and offers a solution to detect and remove it on your phone.
